The collection of the Campus 1 Library of the University of West Attica is comprised of 100.000 volumes of books (including the Hellenic Open University’s books) and 800 titles of periodicals, so as to best facilitate its users’ needs. Logically, several rules are being used as far as the cataloguing, classification and indexing of the printed material is concerned.
The standards ISBD and the 2nd Edition of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules are being used for the cataloguing. All bibliographical information are stored into an electronic database to form the public catalogue (OPAC). For the organisation of the public catalogue, the international standards of registration, organisation and distribution of bibliographical information in electronic form are used (MARC 21).
For the classification of the books according to their subject, the 23rd Edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification is being used. For the material’s subject indexing, the Hellenic Subject Headings of the National Library of Hellas (as they have been formed until now) as well as the foreign Subject Headings of the Library of Congress are being used in order to create a bilingual catalogue of subject headings.
Library material is located according to its Dewey Decimal Classification Number as follows:
Ground floor: 000-514.9
1st floor: 515-620.9 and 660-999
2nd floor: 621-659 and printed scientific journals
